White Sox edge Guardians 4–3, take 2–0 ALDS lead

Braden Montgomery’s two-run double keyed a three-run sixth and Sean Burke threw 5⅓ innings of one-hit relief. Chicago is one win from its first ALCS since 2005; Game 3 is Wednesday in Chicago.

The White Sox beat the Guardians 4–3 Monday at Progressive Field to take a 2–0 lead in the best-of-five AL Division Series, the Associated Press reports. Chicago is 4–0 this postseason, all on the road, and one win from its first American League Championship Series since its 2005 World Series title.

Cleveland scored twice in the first, helped by a throwing error by Sean Newcomb. Munetaka Murakami’s RBI single made it 2–1 in the fourth, and in the sixth Braden Montgomery lined a two-run double down the right-field line and scored on Chase Meidroth’s single. Sean Burke allowed one hit over 5 1/3 innings of relief with six strikeouts; Jo Adell’s RBI triple in the eighth cut it to 4–3 before Grant Taylor closed it out for his second straight save. Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out 11. Game 3 is Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Chicago.
