Train horns are back across St. Louis; aldermen meet today on quiet zones
Train horns have been sounding more often across St. Louis since the Federal Railroad Administration suspended quiet zones at 187 railroad crossings last month, First Alert 4 reports. For 18 years, the city did not file the proper paperwork for crossings needing upgrades, and FRA emails went to a former city employee who left more than a year ago.
Ald. Michael Browning, who chairs the Public Infrastructure and Utilities Committee, called an emergency meeting for Wednesday, Oct. 7. The city says crossing signs will be swapped from 30-inch to 36-inch starting the week of Oct. 12 and new stop bars are due to be painted by Oct. 7; the FRA will inspect each corridor once repairs and documentation are in.
