St. Louis moves to foreclose on 500 neglected properties

Unpaid code fines are being turned into tax bills; suits are expected this month and courthouse-step sales early next year.

St. Louis expects to file lawsuits later this month against about 500 vacant, tax-delinquent properties with repeat code violations, St. Louis Magazine reports. A 2024 city law lets unpaid fines for board-ups and grass cutting become special tax bills, and the city can foreclose when those go unpaid.

Alderwoman Anne Schweitzer called the effort a pilot that could be expanded. The sheriff’s sales are expected early next year. Properties that don’t sell would go to the city’s land bank, which already holds about 11,500 parcels.
