Film studio breaks ground in Wood River, banking on Illinois tax credits

Hollywood River Studios plans up to six studios and 300–500 jobs; Pritzker touted the state’s film credit at the groundbreaking.

Hollywood River Studios broke ground Monday in Wood River in Madison County, St. Louis Public Radio reports. The company plans to spend about $62 million on up to six studios totaling 140,000 square feet, hopes to start production next summer and estimates 300 to 500 jobs once complete. It will also rent a 50,000-square-foot Granite City facility for equipment and trucks.

Gov. JB Pritzker said the project will bring union jobs. Illinois’ film credit offers a 35% uncapped base plus bonuses; the studio is eligible for 45%, including extras for filming downstate and following green-production guidelines. Developer Christopher Breakwell, who founded 31st Street Studios in Pittsburgh, said the credits drew him to Illinois.
